about Act 1 Scene 5

In this scene we are presented with an almost furious Rita, since her husband has just burnt her books and papers. For this reason, Frank invites her to the pub to talk about her personal life and the relationship with Denny, her husband. He is totally aware that being concerned with these matters won’t let her pay attention to the class. However, she doesn’t accept the invitation, simply, because she doesn’t want her personal life to interfere with her studies. She doesn’t want to spend the few hours she has to study, talking about how miserable her life with her husband is.

A few minutes later, Rita invites Frank to the theatre to see ‘The Importance of Being Ernest’. He is reluctant to go, not because he doesn’t like the idea of going out with Rita but because of several reasons. Firstly, he hates the theatre, even more in this particular case that it is an amateur production. And then, he is concerned about Julia, his wife, since she would be jealous of Rita. Here, we get to know that Frank finds Rita not only attractive but also irresistible. Personally, this is a hint that something may happen between them later in the play.

Yes! I agree! Something MUST happen between them later in the play!
Well, at least that's my feeling after having read the scenes up to now...And that brings me to think about this issue of 'attraction' between the teacher and his/her student...In my opinion, I think that that is a hot issue..!
Anyway, no matter what might go on between them I do believe that they'll enrich a lot from their relationship! And, after all, that is what a teacher-student relationship is... It's a process by which both parts win and learn a lot! Isn't it? :)
Keep on blogging! ;)

What a topic alez.... what in our language we would say "CHAN!!!"
Isn't the relationship between teacher an her students a life long romance???? (probably not physical love, but it is love anyway)
Just a question that have just come to my mind.
Thanks for commenting.

Estela Cammarota (Argentinean engineer and wonderful teacher trainer) once said at a presentation I attended: "My trainees often ask me for tips to succeed at teaching university level students. I just tell them 'Love them'. That's all it actually takes."

I absolutely agree with you two (Alez and Yoha) that there's a lot of love involved in all relationships teacher-student... Now, that in the case of Frank and Rita that will trascend to "couple-like" love (so to call it!)... let's see!

In the meantime, a "moral dilemma": should Frank and Rita try to avoid such a development of their relationship?

Big hug,
Gladys

Hi Gla!
I guess that tehy cannot develop both relationships at the same time (meaning student-teacher and couple relationship). IF they don't avoid their "couple" feelings, in the end, the would have to avoid the teaching-learning relationship.
At least, that is what I would do in that case. Am I that wrong?
Just wondering....

What a tough question! All I can say is I've never met a teacher who was able to teach her partner (even in my case, where I've "shone" teaching friends and other relatives -IMHO, at least- I've failed completely with my husband!).
I'd say the situation would be morally ambiguous and if possible, not desirable, especially if evaluation is to be carried out by standards set by third parties...

Let's go on reading and see how they cope with it!

Love,
Gladys
